East Lyn Fishery to Remain Closed Sept 2013

East Lyn Fishery to remain closed - September 2013

The Watersmeet and Glenthorne fishery on Exmoor’s River Lyn is to remain closed until the end of the 2013 season to safeguard salmon and sea trout stocks. The Environment Agency closed the fishery on July 12 following a higher than normal number of fish deaths due to disease. The action was taken to reduce stress on remaining fish and ensure as many as possible successfully spawn later this year. A similar outbreak occurred on the East Lyn in 2012. Symptoms shown by diseased fish include open lesions around the head and fungus on fins and other parts of the body. A detailed post mortem examination of a salmon carried out at the Agency’s National Fisheries Laboratory proved inconclusive.

Fish passage improvements
We have paid for the feasibility studies and designs for fish and eel passes at Clapton and Seaborough on the River Axe, Dorset. Both of these projects are being managed by the Westcountry Rivers Trust with funding through the Axe Exe River Restoration Project. Feasibility studies and initial designs have also been completed for a number of other sites, including St. James weir in Exeter. Pre-work preparations are also underway, for the removal of two weirs at Storridge on the River Yealm, Devon.
After significant operational issues throughout construction, the Tipton St. John fish pass on the River Otter is due for completion in September. The Colleton fish pass on the River Taw has now been completed, with work now focusing on reinstatement of the working area.

Martyn Green - Coarse, Sea & Game Angling - Totnes

As an angling coach, qualified teacher, writer and all-round angler with a particular interest in light tackle, including LRF (Light Rock Fishing), ISO fishing etc., I have fished in the sea, in rivers and in stillwaters for a variety of species using both traditional methods and the latest, most up-to-date approaches, including several that I invented myself. I wrote ‘Why Sea Fishing with Lighter Tackle Rocks’ to share my passion for this style of fishing and have since worked with individuals, groups and families to help them enjoy some wonderful sport.

As a fully qualified Angling Trust tridiscipline  - coarse, game and sea fishing - coach and coach educator, I offer coaching in all traditional – and many new - forms of coarse, game and sea angling to not only help people to catch fish but also to have a great deal of fun in the process. I want my clients to really enjoy their time with me and can cater for all individuals regardless of age or experience, whether it be light rock fishing, float, beachcasting, bass or many other techniques, be they coarse, game or sea. I particularly enjoy helping people learn the art of fly fishing for trout, saltwater predators like bass and, in the stillwaters, fly fishing for carp, which give a sensational fight, and several other coarse species.

I can also help with casting, rig design and construction and fly dressing across all three disciplines. I coach a number of light tackle techniques, including estuary style fishing, e.g. for mullet and bass, pole fishing in the sea – absolutely terrific and very simple for not only children but people of all ages - hybrid fly tackles, float, leger, spinning across a variety of styles and inshore boat fishing, whether it be on your own boat or one chartered for the day. I am also fully equipped to target the opposite end of the scale with beachcasters and distance rigs from shore or heavier species like rays from boat.

I am also building a series of YouTube videos to help my clients and others with their fishing, all of which can be found on my website:

Martyn is also a graphic artist and the author of nine books on fishing (not to mention children’s books inspired by his love of the sea). You can enjoy his writing by accessing his kindle page using the link below:

Environment Agency South West Newsletter May 2013

Submitted by Mandi on June 19, 2013 - 2:35pm

This newsletter is a quarterly update on some of the fisheries work undertaken by the Environment Agency and other partners including the Rivers Trusts, within the South West region.
Fish passage improvements
Our Cornwall fisheries team employed APEM to undertake assessments for fish and eel passage at 11 weir sites and 24 hydrometric structures owned by us. The weir sites were selected on catchments that are failing for fish under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Further action is being undertaken on the River Yealm where two weirs in Storridge Woods are to be removed in 2013. Feasibility studies have been completed on weirs at Blachford on the Yealm and Cann Weir on the River Plym. Improvements are being made at the highest priority hydrometric sites for fish and eel passage.

Improving fisheries management - Improving angling
If you are concerned about how well your water is fishing, or if you just want to know more about the growth of your fish, using our Stillwater Fish Ageing Survey Kit may provide you with vital information for the management of your fishery. If you are thinking about stocking more fish because catches are poor, it could save you money.
We will send you a "kit", containing everything you need, including advice, to measure and remove scales from your fish. We will age the scales (counting the yearly marks the fish lay down on their scales), calculate growth rates and send you a specific report on the growth of those fish and recommendations about fisheries management steps that may be valuable.
